In this whirlwind program, American composer Mason Bates leads the way with his techno-infused Mothership, complete with improvisation and 21st-century dance elements. Acclaimed pianist Charlie Albright has been praised by the New York Times for his “jaw-dropping technique” and “virtuosity with a distinctive musicality.” Charlie makes his Signature Symphony debut with Ellington’s optimistic New World A-Comin and Gershwin’s timeless icon, Rhapsody in Blue. The evening concludes with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s final work, his Symphonic Dances. This work echoes his love of his new American home and blends the endless melodies of his Romantic style with a forward vision and even hints of jazz.
